Back to the Future!

Back to the Future!

Over forty six years ago, Living Earth opened its doors to the Worcester community on Pleasant St, the very first store of its kind in central Massachusetts. I’ve been a member of the L.E. family for a substantial chunk of that time. I have fond memories of the old store with the earthy scents of patchouli and valerian competing for one’s attention. I remember the heavy crocks brimming with beans, grains, nuts and dried fruit lined up in formation on the creaky wooden floor.  There were a myriad of medicinal herbs I had never heard of, many foraged from distant, exotic locales. I was fascinated with some of the more unusual products like chia seeds and quinoa, some thirty years before they became the “in things” they are today. Dried ginseng roots, with their wonderfully contorted ways, were nestled in a glass apothecary jar, thousands of miles from their East Asian origins.

A lot of time has passed since those nascent days and if there has been one constant in the history of the Living Earth, it is one of change. In 1972, after Living Earth’s first year in business, David Bowie released his classic song “Changes”.  How apropos that for the next forty five years the evolution of the Living Earth would resonate with Bowie’s chorus of “Ch- Ch- Ch- Changes!” After one major move to Chandler St. and numerous additions, subtractions, remodels, face-lifts, and assorted tweakings here and there, the Living Earth is coming full circle and embracing its metamorphosis to meet the current needs of the Worcester community. I view it as a sort of “Back to the Future” progression without the aid of the movie’s iconic DeLorean Time Machine. In lieu of Doc Emmett Brown’s enigmatic Flux Capacitor there is the vision, energy and ingenuity of the Maykel family that have brought this renaissance to fruition. We hope you enjoy the new look and the many fine products L.E. has to offer.
